It goes without saying, driving the wrong way on a highway is beyond dangerous but all-too-often we read stories, or hear on the news, about another person getting behind the wheel after heavy drinking, going the wrong way on a roadway and killing an innocent driver. Well, the tragedy strikes again, but this time it is a former police officer that was on the other side of the law—drinking, driving, going the wrong way on a highway and killing an innocent driver in the process.
The former Long Island police officer, Robert Scheuerer, was sentenced this past Monday (03/04/2019) to three to nine years for an accident that occurred in 2016. Scheuerer was getting behind the wheel, drunk, and killing thirty-seven (37) year old Brian Fusaro of Bay Shore. The accident took place on the Sunrise Highway, Scheuerer hitting the unsuspecting and oncoming van; Fusaro as the only passenger.
Jennifer McLogan, from CBS2’s new, reported that Robert Scheuerer had been drinking beers and margaritas for nearly five (5) hours with his fellow officers the night the accident occurred. Alarmed motorists began furiously honking their horns, flashing their headlights and swerving to avoid Mr. Scheuerer’s oncoming vehicle. To no avail, Mr. Scheuerer would continue and hit Mr. Fusaro head-on in his (Fusaro’s) company van.
Not only did an innocent man lose his life so suddenly and for inexcusable reasons, but the man at fault is someone who would have naturally been the one to pull over a drunk driving suspect, to avoid the exact situation he now finds himself in. No matter who you are, or what your position is in law, it is always best to avoid driving while intoxicated at all costs. Following the indictment, Robert Scheuerer was promptly fired. In court, Mr. Scheuerer accepted full responsibility for the accident.
